Mindset Shifts

September 8, 2023by Wes McNeillie0

Lewis Howes is a name you may or may not have heard of before. He has a strong presence on Instagram, the social platform I use most frequently, with close to 3 million followers. I came across him on my “Search & Explore” feed. I googled his name and started reading about him. The more I read, the more I liked. He was a former Division 1 athlete (football) who had overcome many obstacles in his life, from his dad being in a horrific car accident (that left him in a coma for three months), to suffering a career ending injury while playing in the Arena Football League. He is very transparent, open and vulnerable with the most difficult moments in his life, which made me appreciate his journey to success so much more. His New York Times Bestseller: The Greatness Mindset: Unlock the Power of Your Mind and Live Your Best Life Today had glowing reviews from some impressive people – Arianna Huffington, founder & CEO of the Huffington Post/author of 15 books, other New York Times best-selling authors, etc. and decided it would be worth reading. Too often, I have limited my readings to books exclusively related to my profession. While I am a huge believer in always being a “student of the business,” I have begun to shift my focus to personal growth books. How to be a better son, brother, friend and employee. This book was the most powerful I have read.

Three of the most important things (in my opinion) to take away from Mr. Howes’s book:

  1. Find your purpose, what he calls your “Meaningful Mission.” Something that you are incredibly passionate about, good at and can use that talent to help others.
  2. Live with a sense of urgency. Push yourself! You are never guaranteed tomorrow, so make the most of today.
  3. Every night before you go to bed, think of at least three things that occurred during the day that you were grateful for.

Live with a huge heart, a strong initiative and surround yourself with people who make you better. That is a recipe for a life well-lived.
